What is a freshwater mussel?
A freshwater mussel is a bivalved mollusk that lives in fresh water. These amazing animals are essentially living water filters. Freshwater mussels act as natural, living water filters, with a single mussel capable of filtering up to 15–20 gallons of water daily. Considering that freshwater mussels can filter out dangerous bacteria such as E. coli, their important role in keeping water clean cannot be underestimated.
Freshwater Mussel Key Uses and Ecological Roles:
1.Water Filtration: As filter feeders, they cleanse water of algae, bacteria, and organic particles, improving water quality. (Living water pumps:Mussels constantly pump water to feed and breathe. They filter out suspended particles in the water. Exactly what they eat is a bit of a mystery, and it probably varies by species and age of the mussel. Detritus, phytoplankton, zooplankton, diatoms, bacteria and other microorganisms are all filtered out of the water by mussels. This makes the animals exceptionally vulnerable to water pollution and degradation of the aquatic ecosystem.)
2.Environmental Monitoring: Due to their sensitivity to pollution, freshwater mussels are excellent indicators of water quality and ecosystem health.
3.Habitat Creation: Their presence on the riverbed provides habitat and shelter for various insect groups and smaller fish species.
4.Nutrient Cycling: They store nutrients in their shells and soft tissue, cycling nutrients from the water column to the bottom ecosystem.
5.Industrial/Commercial Use: Shells are harvested (where legal) to be used as nuclei in the cultured pearl industry. Historically, they were used for buttons.
